Terrain
INTRODUCTION
Building Wargame Scenery and Terrain is something I've been wanting to get into for quite some time. The only issue was I wanted to make sure it could be with the same user-friendly mindset I've had with my other projects.
It's been something I've been experimenting towards for a while now, and I'm finally ready to showcase the process. I'm setting this page up as a sort of devlog of me exploring different construction designs until I find what I feel would work best for a large audience to build their own scenery using my artwork.
FEEDBACK
Working on this project I plan on releasing a bunch of my design for free so anyone can try their hand at building these models at home. I would love to get your feedback, which you can place on my Youtube videos or my Instagram posts about the project. If you'd like to support the project directly, you can always drop by my Patreon where I will also be releasing art assets for tools like Dungeondraft.
FLOWER SHOP
This building is based on Concept Art by Zyk0 C.
It is my first test printing a building and assembling it using glue and magnets. Like my first fantasy village design, all the buildings are modular and can be explored level by level. The building has four levels, and two unique locations: the Flower Shop with a secret hideout on top and a Guardhouse in the little side building.
Each level is magnetic and snaps into place when you place them on top of each other.
If you'd like to assemble this building yourself, check out the link to the PRINTS below the next image and you can also find a YOUTUBE video tutorial on how to assemble this building below.
FANTASY VILLAGE
The first building I designed was the Potion Shop. It has 3 floors that players can explore, with a potion shop on the ground floor and a gathering place for bandits on the second.
It features some experimental designs like the folding bay window on top, a little wooden roof overhang and a wide staircase outside the building.
You can find free ART & PRINT assets using the links here. The print sheets are currently set up for my EPSON ET-8550 and still have some design flaws to them that I solved in later prints. I will update these once I have figured out my finalized construction methods.
This was the first take on my bridge design. All the clips made it difficult to place minis on the bridge. I plan on doing a glued version of the floorplans of my buildings as well for this specific reason.
HOUSES
In my next series of buildings for this project I mainly spent some time experimenting with the construction designs and the clips. Reinforcing the base with floors, exploring several styles of rooftop windows, building chimneys, etc.
These two houses were the final designs that used the floor level printed on top of the terrain, with the final house having the floorplate attached to the building.
Now that I had removed the ground level from my terrain sheets, I could reuse these maps for random encounters as well. It also makes it a lot easier to reuse my models and mix and match them to whatever terrain I want for future use.
CHURCH - MEDIUM
The final building in my fantasy village project was this church building. It's medium size, I would love to make a smaller wooden church next and at some point build a bigger cathedral design as well.
The design is a lot sturdier than all the other buildings in this series. It features the best of all my construction updates including an integrated floorplate at ground level and for my main rooftop.
The church tower can also be converted into a DICE TOWER by including a couple of slanted slides on each of the levels. They were designed to angle all the dice towards the front door of the tower so that they don't get clogged at the ground level.
The print sheets as they are still have the old staircase design on them, one I plan on updating in the future as well.
The staircase was supposed to be a main feature of the church, as it would allow characters to navigate the church all the way up to the tower roof. The design mainly had some issues with the clips that I used for the assembly, I plan on building a second version that will come with fewer clips and possibly using some glue this time. Time will tell where these designs end up. Feel free to try them out yourself and get back to me with some feedback!
The staircase was one of several designs as well. I'm currently working on a new design to make it fit in my church tower so that I can build the next version of this building. I will also be looking into designing some custom plastic clips to replace some of the cardstock ones.
